Rev. Wayne Mort

I greet you in the name of the One who calls us “beloved!” I am excited to join you in worshiping our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at Batavia First! You must know that I had prayed fervently that our Bishop would allow me to continue to serve under appointment now that I have been moved because of my age, to a Retired Elder status.

My family have been United Methodists, going back several generations. My call to ministry came when I was a young teenager growing up in North Syracuse, NY. That call however, was not answered by me for many years. I chose to study Mechanical Technology at Onondaga Community College and then joined the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, NY as a machine design draftsman. I enlisted in the US Navy where I served for four years with the SEABEES as an Engineering Aid attached to a Mobile Construction Battalion. I made two difficult deployments to VietNam. Upon returning to Kodak I completed my education at Rochester Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After nearly 33 years I took early retirement from Kodak to finally answer God’s unrelenting call to enter the ministry.

I graduated from Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School with a MDiv degree and have served as a church pastor in various Districts in our Conference for over the past twenty years. It has been the joy of my life! To proclaim God’s Holy Word and serve Christ’s Holy Church is a sacred privilege and one that I fully immerse myself. I come to Batavia First UMC full of energy and excitement and pray that we can all grow our faith together and fully answer God’s call that Christ has placed on each of our lives.

On a personal note, I have been married to my wife Sheri, for 52 years, we have 2 married daughters and 4 grandchildren who all live in the Rochester area. I plan to be in the office on Mondays, Wednesdays and either Thursdays or Fridays from 9 am to noon. Should you need to contact me, my email is:, cell is (716) 264-3462, Parsonage is (716) 805-7271. Thank you!

I can’t wait to see you in church this Sunday!

“Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice!”—Philippians 4:4

Jean Utz

Six years ago, I took the Administrative Assistant position at Batavia First UMC. My job here has been a wonderful way to meet new people and extend a helping hand at times, too.

I have been a Genesee county resident for my whole life, but recently moved to the Brockport area with my husband, Jeff. We have two grown children, Jared and Julie, and five grandchildren ranging in ages from 15 to 7 years old. All of them live close by.

In my spare time, I get my younger grandchildren on the school bus each morning, sew and quilt as much as possible, and play golf as often as the weather allows.

Anita Giles

I have worked in the United Methodist community since 1994 beginning at Akron, Oakfield and now Batavia First United Methodist Church. I also manage two low income housing buildings during the week.

I have lived in Oakfield since 1984 with my husband, Dennis of 32 years. We have one son, David who turned 30 this year and lives in the house next door to us. Our two Shihtzus, Alex and Cody complete our family unit.

I enjoy taking care of the yard and flowers, cooking as time permits, and traveling with my husband.
